Performer Centered Model – William Deterline
William Deterline is the push behind the Performer Centered Model of Human Performance Technology. His focus is on the individual human element of performance identified as the “performer” in this model.
There are many influences and motivators (or unfortunately de-motivators) that control the performance of the individual that are analyzed in this model. The key to this model is the understanding that there are many factors that are often unconnected forces and these forces rarely work together. Thus for this model, there is no one starting point but all of the factors are combined and taken into consideration
The Performance Centered Model is broken down into four categories that overlap; policies, culture, mission, goals and objectives.
For discussion purposes, using the diagram above, we will start with policies.
Policies can indeed have a major effect on performance. These are the policies set by an organization. Questions asked in this model include how the performer views these policies; Do they agree with the policy? Do they know the purpose and value of the policy to the organization? In this model the supervisor or manger will work with the performer providing information and tools needed to not only follow the policies of the organization but work efficiently under these set policies.
The culture of the work environment is also an important factor that influences the performer. This environment promotes and should promote a positive work environment to create a positive culture for the performer. The factors that effect of the work environment include support to standard operating procedures for the people working within an organization.
Mission, Goals and Objectives are closely related in this model. This model focuses on making sure the mission matches up with the goals and objectives of the organization. The mission, goals and objectives can be influenced by trends and influences of society and are subject to change based on these influences. This model will access to see if incentives are in place to complete the goals and objectives of the organization. Performers also need to be matched to the mission of the organization based upon experiences, education and selection/hiring to ensure that the performer will fit in with the culture of the organization. It is also important that proper training and continued training is available for the performer.
Conclusion. All of the factors listed, policies, culture, mission, goal and objectives must feed into the performer to expect that the accomplishments are the outcomes of a well-organized workplace. The main objective of the Performance Centered Model is to identify all of the unconnected influences and create a more connected organization. This is a great model for start-up companies!
